The least costly method to determine the animal origin of leather is to do a morphological comparison of the grain side. Each animal carries the signature of its species in its hide by the kind of arrangement and distribution of the hair follicles and pores. This gallery is meant to be an open source tool for the identifications of ancient leather. The samples are a selection of raw leather with a grain side in its natural and unmodified state. This sample is a first sketch of a database we intend to develop. This tool for the animal determination of leather responds to a real demand among professionals in cultural heritage conservation.
